Summary: The Marine Society was the world's first seafarers’ charity. It provides a range of services to seafarers and shore-based maritime professionals to enhance learning and well-being, and to facilitate personal and professional development. No organisation has more experience of delivering high-quality, flexible learning at sea or of placing the well-being of seafarers first.

Note/Restrictions: Learning: manage and co-ordinate training programmes from mainstream providers for delivery at sea. Tutor-supported distance learning in a broad range of subjects and levels to suit all ages, abilities and aspirations. Enters seafarers for public examinations and conducts them at sea.

Underpinning support for Open University study at sea. Learn@Sea platform provides a range of up-skilling programmes in a maritime-contextualised format, e.g. Maths@Sea, Writing@Sea and English@Sea, helping thousands of seafarers globally. Financial Support: a range of scholarship programmes for individuals to support professional development. Administers J W Slater Fund in conjunction with Nautilus International that offers scholarships for ratings to achieve their first Officer of the Watch certificate. Interest-free loans are also available to UK seafarers for study programmes. Crew Libraries: a crew library service is provided to vessels globally. Libraries are tailored to suit the requirements and tastes of those on board. Information, Advice and Guidance: Marine Society is a Matrix Standard accredited provider of independent advice and guidance to seafarers on any matter of concern. Book Sales: offers an online bookshop www.marinesocietyshop.org selling any title in any format, providing expert advice and personal service.
